Cloudy day...

Yesterday was cloudy during almost all day, but was a great day to enjoy the snow anyway...

I was out snowshoe hiking and was a great surprise to see that even in a cloudy day it's possible to have a good view and enjoy another kind of beauty, full of different shades of white!

More about it in other posts.

This pictures was taken yesterday at the top of Higashitateyama, about 2.000 m above sea level.

It's warm today...

After days seeing signs registering -10° C, -14° C... it's surprisingly warm today: -4° C!

On the other hand, the visibility today is very poor and changing throughout the day!

This picture was taken one hour ago.

Letters

I heard today, from the Shiga Kogen's guide, that in the old times, people use to write letters using the peelings of Dakekamba's bark [Dakekamba or Erman's Birch (Betula ermanii)], which peels naturally.

Sunday Morning

Today the sky was gorgeous in the morning but during the day became cloudy. But still a very good day for Shiga Kogen guests!

This picture, taken this morning, shows 2 typical trees in Shiga Kogen. Shirakaba or Japanese White Birch (Betula platyphylla var. japonica), on the left, and Dakekamba or Erman's Birch (Betula ermanii), on the right. In the background you can see Nishitateyama and Higashitateyama ski fields.

Kid's Ski Day

Today is a special day! Like every third Sunday of the month, today is Kid's Ski Day at Shiga Kogen.

Snow Monkey Park

Few days ago I decided to visit the Jigokudani Yaen Koen also known as Snow Monkey Park.
Since I’m in Shiga Kogen, it’s just a 30 min. bus ride to the park.
I heard about Snow Monkeys a lot before, but this visit surprised me.

Getting off the bus, you are not delivered straight to the monkey’s onsen… you have to walk first.
It’s about 30 min walking through the Valley of Yokoyu-River, enjoying the beauty of the nature and trying to meet inhabitants such as rabbits, foxes and, of course, monkeys.

After this walk through the valley, you finally can meet the monkeys. I heard that sometimes they just don’t appear… but the day I was there, lots of monkeys were bathing in the big private hot spring. Private to the monkeys, because it is said that those monkeys start to enter in outdoor onsens so local people just decided to build onsens especially for the monkeys. If you are lucky, you may be able to watch the monkeys at feeding time!
I couldn’t imagine how close they are all the time… The monkeys have gotten used to humans and are around us everywhere.

After my visit to the park, my Japanese friend told me next time I should try a traditional Japanese sweet called chimaki, made of rice, wrapped in bamboo leaves and steamed. She said you can eat it in the ryokan, the traditional Japanese-style hotel, even if you are just visiting the park and that chimaki is the best of the neighborhood! Can’t wait for my next visit!!! Until them, I can check the monkeys everyday at Jigokudani's livecam! There are some pictures available at the botton of the page, on the left, which I think this one is the best picture of all... but this one here is very funny!
There's a guy who lives near the park who writes in a personal blog with lots of interesting information about the park and the region. His name is Zeno and his blog is very helpful!

Check out some pictures taken at the park:

The trail covered by snow...

If you are coming to visit this park during the winter, don't forget to wear very comfortable and warm waterproof shoes. The trail used to be covered by snow for about 4 months a year.

And that’s the view of the Valley of Yokoyu-River. You will be able to see it after 25 min walk.

Snow Monkeys

I’m almost feeling like a Japanese person…

Sunny day and lots of snow outdoor. A tasty hot lamen to warm us indoor.
And, in the end of the day, a relaxing ofuro bathe…
Could be more Japanese?
Yakebitaiyama... on our way to have a hot lamen.

Amazing Friday

Friday was another amazing day in Shiga Kogen! Even though a little colder than the rest of the week... it was sunny all day! Beautiful to snowboard, ski, hiking or just to sit (indoor, of course) and appreciate the view!
Signs on the street registered -14° in the end of the day!

This is the Ropeway which connects Hasuike to Takamagahara in 8 min. Runs every 20 min.

cold morning...

The day started with a thin snow and temperatures about -10° C.
It was cloudy with soft snow fallen until 9:30 a. m. and then suddenly the sun appears and the weather is great to snowboarders and skiers again!
Those two pictures were made with 5 min. in between and shows Higashitateyama Ski Field.

and that's how a beautiful day ends here...

That's the Kumanoyu ski run yesterday, at the end of the day.
Great weather from the sunrise till sunset!

Sunny Day

Perfect weather today!

With few people on the ski runs, the day was perfect for skiers and snowboarders in Shiga Kogen!

Without crowds, queues... it was just like have your private ski run!
